In this episode, Sierah Tyson, the Education Nomad, sits down with Josh Parker of Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School in Washington, D.C. to talk about the inextricable link between standards and educational equity.

Parker was the 2012 Maryland Teacher of the Year and the 2017 Lowell Milken Center Fellow (the first African-American male educator from Baltimore County to win the state award). He now serves the students and teachers of Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School as an ELA instructional coach.

In this episode, Sierah and Josh discuss:

  • The relationship between teaching the standards and educational equity as well as the challenges of fostering equity and implementing a rigorous and aligned curriculum.
  • Centering the work of teaching around the notion of “opening up the box of opportunity.”
  • Building an arsenal of “teacher moves” towards equitable instruction.
  • Making sure teachers attain a level of content knowledge necessary to help students thrive.
  • The competing forces of “fit and flexibility” into equitable instruction.
  • The profound and unending impact of this work on the lives of students.
